A Typical Day

Children will experience a variety of key learning times during their school day, which may include:

Free Choice Time: Children rotate through a variety of hands-on activities which include process-oriented art, building or block play, learning materials such as fun task in counting/patterning/sorting/matching/measuring, science, and sensory play, dress up/pretend play and puppets, and special teacher planned activities for fine and large motor skills. Teacher, assistant, and volunteers are available to assist the children to facilitate learning. At the end of this individualized learning time children are encouraged to assist in putting away materials.

Circle Time: Teacher-led learning time while children sit on the floor in a semi-circle. Children are encouraged to participate in singing, music and movement, storytelling and reading books, flannel board with activities encouraging individual learning and working together as a large group.

Bathroom, Washing, and Snack: Children learn to line up and walk as a group to go to the bathrooms, where they wash their hands and wait for their classmates. The class returns to the room and the focus is on children preparing, serving, pouring their snack while practicing good manners and socialization. Children gain a sense of pride and self-confidence by taking turns to bring snack from home to share with their peers. Children say or sing prayer before eating.

Outside Play and Exploration:
Children practice their self-help skills to dress for the weather. Large and small motor development, planning, pretending, social development including problem-solving skills and conflict resolution are only some of the skills practiced during the extended time outdoors.

Small Group Time: Children return to the classroom and break up into groups to participate in pre-writing and pre-reading activities, learning games, science experiments, obstacle courses, etc.

Lunch: When children stay for lunch, they are encouraged to learn to open their containers on their own, eat healthy food first, balance socializing and eating, and clean up after themselves. This is to prepare them for elementary school. Children say or sing prayer before eating.

Goodbye Circle and Dismissal: The group gathers to recap the day by singing songs and saying goodbye.
